Navigating the Deep and Dark Web: A Practical Guide


If you're familiar with the internet, you've probably heard of the deep web. This is a subset of the broader Internet that doesn't show up on search engines and requires special software tools to access. However, the dark web sites is a different world entirely. It's a hive of criminal activity that's filled with everything from weapons, to illegal drugs, to mafia-style services such as contract killings and blackmailing. It's also a breeding ground for ransomware, with criminals offering to hack users' devices and then hold them hostage until they get paid in cryptocurrency.


It's hard to overstate the sheer number of crimes that take place on the dark web, which is responsible for a growing proportion of identity theft cases. There's also a thriving marketplace for stolen data like credit card numbers, usernames and passwords, and other personal information that can be used to steal identities or run fraudulent transactions. Websites such as Silk Road, a platform where people can buy and sell illegal drugs with bitcoin, and Besa Mafia, a site that allows people to hire hitmen to carry out assassinations, are just two of many sites on the dark web.


While much of the content on the dark web sites is illegal, it's not all nefarious. Some sites on the dark web sites are designed to promote free speech and help dissenting voices organize in countries where governments and authoritarian bodies restrict freedom of speech or unfairly prosecute whistleblowers. There are also websites that provide legal services, such as helping clients prepare for court hearings or advising them on a defense strategy.


In addition, the dark web sites is home to many hacker forums where individuals can hire hackers to hack into their personal or business computers, steal their data and send it to criminals or unscrupulous marketers. It's also a hub for human trafficking, child pornography and even murder on demand.


Navigating the Deep and Dark Web: A Practical Guide

While it isn't necessarily illegal to browse this part of the web, it is a risky endeavor. You'll need a special browser, called Tor, and the right software to reach it. Then, you'll need to make sure your phone or tablet isn't connected to any other network that could expose your device to hostile attackers.


You can download Tor on your Android smartphone or tablet for free from the Google Play Store, along with a browser called Orfox that lets you access.onion websites. Once you're ready to go, open Orbot and tap "Start." You may have to wait a few moments as your device connects to the Tor network. Once that's complete, open Orfox and use it as you would any other mobile browser.


Then, start searching for the content you want to find on the dark web. Keep in mind that it can take time to locate the content you're looking for on the deep and dark web, especially if you're new to this kind of search.
