Dark Web's Role in Political Activism

While the dark web is associated with illicit activities, such as drug trafficking, terrorism, and child pornography, political activists and privacy advocates defend its use. The dark web is a series of encrypted networks that can hide users’ identity and location and are only accessible through special software. It consists of sites that require a username and password to log in, and a majority are hosted on the Tor network (which is named after the onion router that it uses to mask users’ identities). It also includes services that allow for communication via forums and chat rooms as well as commerce through marketplaces.

The largely unregulated nature of the dark web has made it an attractive space for disseminating alternative COVID-19 information. While mainstream social media platforms strive to actively monitor and delete misinformation, the dark web is rife with it. The availability of forged certificates to obtain COVID-19 vaccines, as well as false information and conspiracy theories about the pandemic and its vaccinations, challenges official health policies and poses risky alternatives for individuals’ and public health.

Criminals have also seized on the dark web’s anonymizing technology to create illicit marketplaces and sell everything from opioids and bomb parts, to weapons large and small, to child pornography and stolen credit cards. While some law enforcement agencies have been able to track and prosecute criminals who make use of the dark web, most are still unaware of it’s existence, which has allowed for widespread illegal transactions.

This nefarious side of the dark web is driven by criminals and organized crime who use its tools to circumvent domestic and international laws. It’s the shadowy underbelly of the internet, and it’s one that governments are working hard to address. This is being done through a combination of strategies, including training officers and investigators to spot relevant evidence, improving information-sharing between agencies, and establishing new structures for cross-organization collaboration.

Although the Dark Web has been linked to terrorism and extremism, researchers have found that it’s not necessarily an effective platform for terrorist or radical groups to spread their ideology. They argue that the lack of centralized platforms on the dark web, combined with other technologies that offer similar anonymity such as encrypted messaging services, makes it less effective for groups to promote their cause.

The dark web is a powerful tool for political activism, but it must be used responsibly. This means avoiding sites with harmful content, logging out when possible, and using software that identifies a user’s location. It’s also important to remember that the dark web can be accessed from anywhere in the world, so the risks associated with problematic online behaviors and exposure to risky online content remain even when an individual is not on a dark web site.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it is vital to understand how to best protect people who need to access information in a timely manner. In order to achieve this, governments should prioritize the development of forensic standards and research on ways to modernize laws governing package inspection.
